Kohran Li (Japanese: 李紅蘭 Ri Kouran; Chinese: 李紅蘭 Lǐ Hónglán) is a member of the first generation Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division, serving as a combat pilot, and the chief mechanic and engineer of the unit. She is one of the main player-controlled units and potential romantic partners in Sakura Wars (1996), Sakura Wars 2: Thou Shalt Not Die and Sakura Wars 4: Fall in Love, Maidens.

Appearance[]

Kohran Li is a young woman with light freckles and purple hair that is usually braided into two pigtails. She wears large round glasses and is almost always seen in a red cheongsam dress in warm weather, and a red tangzhuan suit in the winter; in the stage shows, she is most often seen in the latter, regardless of the depicted season. She is also often seen in a green mechanic's suit when performing maintenance on the Revue's spiricle armor.

Personality[]

Kohran has a vibrant, upbeat personality and a pronounced sense of humor. She is thus considered the Revue's "mood-maker" and often plays a lead role in the Flower Division's comedy productions. She is an avid inventor, constantly creating new machines and gadgets with the sole intent of improving the lives of others. Though her inventions frequently fail, often resulting in large explosions, she rarely ever loses her determination and instead looks forward to her future projects. She is particularly fond of the Kobu spiricle armors, treating them and referring to them as if they were her own children. Despite her outward optimism, the scars of her childhood trauma as a war orphan run deep. She feels a profound anger towards those who would use technology to harm innocent people, and the thought of her inventions ever being used towards that end terrifies her.[2][3]

Background[]

Kohran's VMU portrait.

Kohran Li was born on March 3, 1906 in Beijing, China, where she lived with her parents and sisters. She took interest in machinery from a young age, with her first successful project being repairing her father's pocketwatch. She lived her life in peace until the Xinhai Revolution broke out in 1911. Kohran lost her home and family in 1912 in the midst of the conflict, becoming an orphan.[2] She only narrowly managed to avoid death herself, as a potentially fatal gunshot was blocked by her father's pocketwatch, which she was keeping in her shirt pocket.[4] Soon after she was taken in by a family of farmers living in the outskirts of Dalian, with whom she lived until 1919, when Ayame Fujieda recognized her spirit power and recruited her to join what would become the Imperial Combat Revue. Upon moving to Japan that same year, she lived in the city of Kobe and was raised by the eccentric British inventor Percy Howard, who helped foster her own love for inventing. As a result of being around Howard and living in Kobe, she learned to speak Japanese with a notedly peculiar Kansai dialect.[4] In 1921, she reunited with Ayame and moved to Tokyo, where, after being encouraged by Ikki Yoneda to pursue her passion for machinery,[2] she started work as an engineer at the Hanayashiki Branch and assisted with the production of the first Kobu,[5] as well as the Skywhale and Goraigo.

In The Games[]

Sakura Wars (1996)[]

In May of 1923, Kohran Li was formally transferred to the Imperial Combat Revue's Flower Division, under the command of Ichiro Ogami. Upon her arrival, her steam-powered motorcycle, Hamaichi, exploded just outside the theater, though nobody was harmed in the process. She immediately took part in the ongoing production of The Things We Do For Love, explaining to Ogami that she'd already had experience filling side roles in the Flower Division's plays on short notice. A few days later, Kohran participated in her first battle as the Hive of Darkness launched an attack on Shiba Park.[5] Kohran participated in every subsequent skirmish against the Hive of Darkness, eventually helping to defeat their leader Tenkai in September of the same year.

On New Year's Day, 1924, Kohran told Ogami that the Kobu had reached their limits and likely wouldn't survive another battle. After her report, if Ogami's relationship with Kohran was strong enough, Kohran asked him if he'd like to go on a date with her to Meiji Shrine to welcome the new year.

The following assumes Ogami went on a New Year's Date with Kohran

Later that day, Meiji Shrine was attacked by Aoi Satan and his Knights of Twilight, who summoned demons to wreak havoc. The Flower Division barely managed to defeat them, and the Kobu wound up broken beyond repair, leaving Kohran heartbroken. The Flower Division subsequently decided to temporarily go their separate ways for three weeks in order to train for the battles ahead, during which Kohran invented a power amplification device which would become integral to their new Jinbu spiricle armors. Upon Ogami's return from training, Kohran told him about her lifelong dream of flying an airplane.[6]

In March of 1924, Aoi Satan succeeded in turning Ayame Fujieda into the demon Aya-Me, leaving Kohran distraught. Ogami helped raise her spirits and assured her they'll bring Ayame back, successfully cheering her up and making her unwittingly blurt out that she loves him. As she attempted to leave in her embarrassment, Ogami stopped her, embracing her as he told her that together they'll make her dream of flying a plane come true, and Kohran in turn told him that he can come along with her.[7] After Aoi Satan restored the Sacred Demon Castle in Tokyo Bay, the Flower Division launched an assault to stop them once and for all. However, one by one, every member of the Flower Division perished in battle, and only Ogami and Kohran survived to confront Aoi Satan and Aya-Me. Ogami was unable to bring himself to attack Aya-Me, letting himself repeatedly take damage until Kohran stepped in and protected him from what would've been a mortal blow, giving him the resolve to finally fight back. After Aya-Me was defeated, Kohran recovered from Aya-Me's attack and joined Ogami in fighting and defeating Aoi Satan. However, Aoi Satan then revealed his true form as Satan, the fallen angel formerly known as Lucifer. At the same time, Ayame was revived as the Archangel Michael, who in turn brought all the fallen members of the Flower Division back to life. Together, the newly reunited Flower Division defeated Satan, sending the Sacred Demon Castle back below the waves and finally bringing peace to Tokyo.[8]

In Kohran's ending, she and Ogami finally made her dream of flying an airplane come true, and together they flew all the way to Beijing. However, the plane's engines eventually blew out, forcing the pair to eject to safety and leave the aircraft to spiral in flames. They sheepishly laughed about the situation as they gently parachuted down to the ground.

Sakura Wars 2: Thou Shalt Not Die[]

Upon Ichiro Ogami's return to Tokyo from his naval exercise in South America in April 1925, if he became romantically involved with Kohran during the events of the first game, Kohran showed up to greet him and escort him back to the Grand Imperial Theater. However, having been transferred back to Hanayashiki in light of the peace following the Sacred Demon Castle incident, she was not able to stay and had to return to work, but not before leaving a gift for Ogami in his room: the Kinematron.[9]

Following the assassination attempt on Ikki Yoneda in late May 1925, Kohran was distraught at the news of Yoneda having fallen comatose with the possibility of never reawakening, and vowed that the perpetrator wouldn't get away with it.[10]

In July of the same year, following Yoneda's awakening from his coma in June, Kohran visited him to announce her return to the Flower Division, just as Ogami and Sakura Shinguji were there to visit him themselves. Ogami and Sakura told her of their altercation with the Minister of the Imperial Army, Keigo Kyogoku, just outside the hospital earlier that day. Upon returning to the theater, while Ogami was helping her test out a new invention, Kohran told him about her personal history; how she got her start with inventing with her father's pocket watch, how she lost her family during the Xinhai Revolution, and how Yoneda encouraged her to follow her passion for machinery. As such, she considered Yoneda just as much a father to her as both her biological father and her foster father, once again vowing to make his would-be assassin pay. Later that night, after hearing a rumor from Saki Kageyama that Kyogoku would be dining at a ryotei restaurant that same evening, Kohran and Sakura left the theater on their own to find him and make him apologize for his actions outside the hospital. They managed to sneak into the restaurant by dressing up as geisha, but soon after, the restaurant fell victim to an arson attack. The sight of the flames made Kohran experience a post-traumatic flashback of the Revolution, and she told Sakura to evacuate the patrons while she goes track down the perpetrator herself, in spite of Sakura's protests. Ogami, who was at the restaurant looking for the two, caught up with Sakura, who filled him in on the situation, and he went after Kohran on his own after. By the time he caught up to her, Kohran was in an emotionally unstable state and lashed out at Ogami. Ogami slapped her on the cheek, then reassured her that he and the rest of the Flower Division are there for her, which managed to calm her down. After escaping the blazing building, they were confronted by the arsonist, Kasha, one of the Five Elements of the Black Demons. He revealed the fire was set to kill them specifically, as well as Imperial Navy Minister Kazutoyo Yamaguchi, for reasons he refused to divulge. They were soon found by the Skywhale, with the rest of the Flower Division and their Kobu in tow. Together the Flower Division escorted Yamaguchi to safety before defeating Kasha, who escaped as he swore his revenge.[2]

Kohran continued to fight against the Black Demons alongside the Flower Division in the subsequent battles. On November 9, 1925, she assisted in quelling the Taisho Restoration, the coup d'état attempt instigated by the Black Demons' mastermind, who was revealed to be none other than Keigo Kyogoku.[11]

After defeating the Black Demons, the Flower Division prepared to end the year with a Christmas play, a one-night-only production of The Miracle Bells. However, this play would be different, in that Ogami was put in charge of picking the star of the show, much to his surprise.

The following assumes Kohran is picked as the star of The Miracle Bells

After much deliberation and discussion with his peers, Ogami finally picked Kohran to play the lead role in The Miracle Bells, despite her insecurities about her appearance. The play wound up being a huge success, and during the wrap party, Ogami and Kohran, with permission and encouragement from Yoneda, left the theater to take a stroll around the city together as the snow fell. Kohran once again expressed insecurity about her appearance, and Ogami reassured her that he liked her the way she is. They then visited an empty church, where Kohran decided to test out one of her new inventions, to predictably explosive results. They then laughed about the situation and wished each other a Merry Christmas.[12]

In January 1926, to celebrate the New Year, Kohran decided to visit Percy Howard, her foster father living in Kobe, and invited Ogami to come along. During their time there, Kohran showed Ogami all of the inventions she made during her childhood, as well as her father's pocket watch, which Howard had been holding onto for safekeeping. They were then interrupted by a call on the Kinematron, coming from Kaede Fujieda, informing them that enemies had been sighted in the Ouji ward of Tokyo. Upon arriving, Ogami and Kohran found the rest of the Flower Division imprisoned in large crystals, with Kyogoku and the remnants of the Black Demons, previously presumed dead, revealing themselves as the culprits. Kohran and Ogami successfully rescued the others and defeated the Black Demons' new footsoldiers, the demon weapons, but were too late to stop Kyogoku from summoning the demonic flying fortress Musashi.[4]

Upon infiltrating Musashi and making their way to the innermost sanctum, the Flower Division sealed away the demons with the Rite of Four Swords and destroyed Musashi's power source. However, Kyogoku had an ace up his sleeve: an ancient mech known as Shinnou, the throne of the gods. During the ensuing battle, as Kyogoku was on the brink of defeat, his body became possessed by the spirit of Shinnou itself. Through Kyogoku, Shinnou tried to convert Kohran to their side, which she staunchly refused. The Flower Division finally defeated Shinnou and Kyogoku for good, and escaped from Musashi as it returned whence it came.[13]

In Kohran's ending, she invited Ogami to Hanayashiki in order to ride the new roller coaster she helped invent, the Gokaigo. Though Kohran enjoyed herself, the experience made Ogami feel sick, and together they rode on the park's Bee Tower attraction as he overcame his nausea. However, during the ride's ascent, it experienced a malfunction, causing Ogami to fall on top of Kohran. Kohran leaned in for a kiss, which Ogami reciprocated, and it was then revealed that Kohran caused the malfunction on purpose.

In April of 1926, Yoneda summoned both Ogami and Kohran to his office for a pair of important announcements. First, Ogami had received a promotion from the rank of Ensign to Lieutenant Junior Grade. Second, Ogami was to leave Japan and travel to France as part of a personnel exchange program, with the departure date set for the following week. Though Kohran tried her best to congratulate him, she ultimately couldn't stop herself from breaking out in tears. The night before his departure, Kohran handed Ogami a letter, telling him not to open it until he was on the boat to France. Ogami attempted to sneak out of the theater in the early morning, in order to avoid making the others sad, but the Flower Division nevertheless showed up at the dock to bid him farewell as his ship left port. Once the ship was out at sea, Ogami read Kohran's letter. In it, she detailed her new dream: to build an airplane capable of continuous flight around the world, so that she may one day fly to France to meet Ogami and travel the globe with him. She ended the letter by promising to see him again someday.[14]

Sakura Wars 3: Is Paris Burning?[]

After Sakura, Sumire Kanzaki and Iris helped instill the value of proper teamwork in the dysfunctional Paris Combat Revue,[15] Kohran, Maria Tachibana and Kanna Kirishima arrived in Paris themselves to help train the Paris Flower Division and improve their combat efficiency. During Kohran's session, Erica Fontaine managed to cause her training unit to self-destruct, taking even Kohran by surprise. However, Kohran didn't bear any ill will towards Erica, saying that, even though Erica failed all the training exercises, she had her own unique strengths. During her stay in Paris, Kohran also got along famously with the Paris Combat Revue's chief mechanic, Jean Léo, going so far as to provide a special teaching session to his crew. Shortly after Kohran's return to Japan, Jean designed the Kobu F2 spiricle armors using components and blueprints provided by Kohran, declaring it the result of the Imperial and Paris Combat Revues' combined power.[16]

Sakura Wars: The Gorgeous Blooming Cherry Blossoms[]

In 1919, Ayame Fujieda helped Kohran move to Japan. She lived in the city of Kobe until 1921, when Ayame brought both her and Iris to Tokyo to formally join the Imperial Combat Revue. Kohran soon thereafter took up residence at the Hanayashiki Branch, assisting with the development of the Kobu and Skywhale. During the rampaging demon incident in Asakusa that same year, she helped Maria, Kanna and Iris fight it using a bazooka of her own invention.

Sakura Wars (TV Series)[]

Sakura Wars: The Movie[]

In January 1927, following the Army's seizure of the Grand Imperial Theater and the forced cessation of Imperial Combat Revue operations, the Flower Division snuck back into the theater through the sewers using one of Kohran's inventions, a small watercraft called the Katsuryu-maru, in order to reclaim their Kobu. During the subsequent battle with the fused mass of Japhkiels controlled by Brent Furlong, Kohran was able to discern its weakness: each individual Japhkiel making up its body was being controlled by a unique sonic frequency. Disrupting said frequencies made the mass go berserk and split open, exposing the mutated form of Furlong at its core and allowing Sakura to land the decisive blow. Later, during the Flower Division's special production of Kaijin Bessou, Ratchet Altair hijacked the play, with Kohran being the first to notice she had gone off-script. Ratchet, remaining in character as the prince, declared her intent to kill Sakura, who was portraying the princess alongside her. Sakura, herself remaining in character, attempted to talk Ratchet out of it, and was soon joined by Kohran and the rest of the Flower Division, who all forgave Ratchet for the misdeeds she alluded to during her monologue. Ratchet experienced a change of heart and the situation was successfully defused, with the audience none the wiser. Ratchet soon thereafter left the Revue on amicable terms and returned to America.

Sakura Taisen: Sumire[]

Other Appearances[]

Hanagumi Taisen Columns[]

In August of 1923, Kohran, upset over the fact she couldn't find the right part needed to repair her steam bike Hamaichi, decided to take a break from work to hang out with Ogami. As they were about to leave the theater to spend a day out on the town, Ogami realized he was broke and didn't want to impose on Kohran by making her pay for him. Kohran then decided they could spend the day wandering around the theater instead, during which they assisted numerous members of the Flower Division with various issues. This culminated with rescuing Sumire from the underground swimming pool, which had started to overheat due to a boiler malfunction. After Ogami and Kohran worked together to fix the boiler, they found the part Kohran had been looking for to fix her bike.

Hanagumi Taisen Columns 2[]

At some unspecified moment in 1925, Kohran had developed a new invention, named "Mr. Swapper", capable of swapping the minds of two people. The machine exploded during testing, with Yuichi Kayama getting caught in the blast, resulting in his mind leaving his body and jumping between multiple people, swapping out their personality for his. Ogami helped Kohran track down Kayama as he jumped from body to body, until they were eventually able to put his mind back in his original body with the help of another invention of hers, "Mr. Undo". Shortly thereafter, Kohran repaired Mr. Swapper and used it to swap bodies with Ogami, leaving him in her body to deal with the wrath of all those whose own bodies had been taken over by Kayama as a result of her invention.

Sakura Wars GB[]

During the incident with the experimental autonomous Kobu in 1923, Kohran was the one to explain the situation and how the Kobu functioned, and she participated in the efforts to subdue it. However, the experimental Kobu would ultimately be defeated by the cadet, who did so using one of the Flower Division members' spare Kobu, with Kohran's being one possible choice. Outside of battle, the cadet assisted Kohran in her early efforts to make a custom plane engine. Though the experiments ended in failure, Kohran reassured them by saying it yielded valuable data nonetheless.

Sakura Wars GB2[]

In 1925, Kohran, along with the rest of the Flower Division and the returning cadet, participated in Operation Thunderbolt to recover the Pandemonium Regalia from the wreckage of the Mikasa in Tokyo Bay, as well as rescue any civilians who had been warped within. Assuming the cadet was joined by Kohran during the final battle, together they were able to prevent the King of the Demon Realm from invading their world via a gate found in the sunken ruins of the Sacred Demon Castle.

Sakura Wars Steam Radio Show[]

At some undisclosed point in time in 1923, Ogami was given tickets to see a film adaptation of The Things We Do For Love, but only enough for him and one other person. After the Flower Division members began to pester Ogami over who he would pick, Commander Ikki Yoneda decided they should compete for it, which was accomplished through the use of one of Kohran's inventions, a compatibility test machine called "Mr. Rivalry," which would pick the most suitable partner for Ogami. If Kohran herself was picked, they went on a date, starting with a trip to the Tokorozawa Airfield. After giving Yoneda a call from the Airfield's reception desk, the pair were granted permission to get a closer look at the airplanes. Ogami promised Kohran with a pinky swear that they would come back to look at the planes again someday, and they ended their date at the movie theater, enjoying each other's company.

Dramatic Dungeon: Sakura Wars[]

In 1929, during an Imperial Revue Flower Division production of The Maid of Orleans, the play was suddenly interrupted by the real Joan of Arc, who disappeared just as quickly as she appeared. Soon after this bizarre occurrence, time and space itself began to warp, turning the streets of Tokyo into a veritable labyrinth filled with monsters. Kohran explained that this also caused the spirit crystals powering the Kobu to not function properly, rendering them unusable. As such, this particular battle had to be fought on foot. Kohran then revealed her newest invention, the Portable Kinematron Kai, an upgrade over the previous Portable Kinematron that granted it the same functionality as the full-sized Kinematron and more, allowing the team to maintain wireless communication from the field even without the Kobu. After notable spikes in spirit power were detected in Ueno, Ginza and Fukagawa, Ogami, Sakura, Iris and Maria left to investigate Ueno Park, Orihime Soletta and Reni Milchstraße went off to investigate the Ginza underground, while Kohran and Kanna headed over to the Fukagawa Mansion. Kanna soon spotted a suspicious figure, appearing to be a "giant purple butterfly-like monster", and chased it into the building. When Kohran tried to follow, the sheer amount of monsters inside impeded her from going any further, leaving her no choice but to call Ogami for backup. Deep underground below the mansion, Kohran and Ogami found not only Kanna, but Sumire as well, whom Kanna and Kohran had mistaken for a "butterfly monster" the whole time. Sumire then rejoined the Imperial Combat Revue on a temporary basis for the duration of the mission.[17]

Following their first encounter with Joan of Arc, the Imperial Combat Revue travelled to New York, where similar disturbances had begun to occur. There they joined up with the New York Combat Revue, with Kohran meeting most of its members for the first time.[18] Afterward, they travelled together to Paris on the Ahab, where, after Ogami got separated from the group following the Ahab's crash landing, they eventually regrouped and joined up with the Paris Combat Revue. Together, aboard the repaired Ahab, the three Revues made their way to the South Pole, where the final battle with Joan of Arc and her allies awaited.[19]

The following assumes that Ogami was the captain in the final battle, Kohran was in his party and that she had the highest trust level with him.

Following the defeat of Joan of Arc deep below the South Pole, the glacier around the party began to collapse, leaving Kohran and Ogami separated from the group. As they looked for a way out, Kohran pushed Ogami out of the way of a large falling hunk of ice, getting herself trapped under it in the process. Though she told Ogami to leave her behind and save himself, Ogami refused, then shattered the ice trapping her. As they were about to finally escape, they ran into Gilles de Rais, who had somehow managed to survive the prior battle. He then revealed to the two that he had been manipulating Joan of Arc all along, making her stray from the path of God and carrying out his will instead. After Ogami and Kohran defeated Gilles de Rais and his monsters by themselves, the spirit of Joan of Arc appeared to take him away and bring him before God. Ogami mused aloud whether the Flower Division would one day be wrongfully branded as heretics, much like Joan of Arc was, before Kohran assured him that he'd be able to protect everyone should that day come. Together they managed to escape the glacier, where they found all the others aboard the Ahab waiting for them.[20]

Trivia[]

  • The name "Kohran" translates to "Red Orchid", keeping with the flower motif shared by most members of the Flower Division.
  • Kohran was heavily inspired by Oji Hiroi's cousin of the same name, as well as her mother, his aunt.[21] Kohran's past was inspired by the lived experiences of his cousin and aunt in the midst of the Cultural Revolution in China,[22][23] and Kohran's theme song from Sakura Wars (1996), "Tokyo Teki Kyuujitsu", as well as the song "Tsubasa", were inspired by the time he took his cousin on a tour of Asakusa in Tokyo.[24][25]
